Since the occupation by the Japanese in the 1940s, the inhabitants of the village of Wates have not succeeded to regain the property rights of their country from the Indonesian soldiers until today.
They can only live on the land with a lot of restrictions. They have been angry and frustrated about this for decades.
Monument For Wates was created by means of a social project gives the villagers a place where they can transform their frustrations.
The light of the sun or the night-lighting on the column is transformed into watery light reflections on the ground via the dents that are made in the RVS column. The dents are created by hits of the villagers with a hammer. The reflections are shining on the words around the column. These words express human universal values such as understanding, recognition, empathy, choice, effectiveness, communication, co-operation…
